Population
Most would say Somerville is a friendly and unique city with different stories to tell depending on what area you frequent or live in. Somerville has a lot of historical attributes and stories, like most towns around Boston. Somerville is a densely populated city compared to most others in the area. Unlike a more suburbia town where neighborhoods aren’t much different than others, Somerville neighborhoods seem to have their own identities. Almost all neighborhoods are tree lined with multi-family homes.
There has been some significant development in recent years with new apartment complexes and retail in Magoun Sq and Assembly Row. Union Sq is undergoing a massive redevelopment to bring more corporate business, retail, dining, and residences, similar to Kendall Sq in Cambridge. Also, in 2022 after what most would say was a decades long wait, the Green line light rail was extended beyond Lechmere in Cambridge to Tufts University in Medford, making it’s way through Somerville to get there….previously these areas were only reached by auto or mbta bus service. Union Sq has it’s own tiny branch off of the new green line extension. Somerville is working on being a more bike friendly city, as recent as 2022 they installed bike lanes and removed street parking from some areas. Last I heard there’s a massive redevelopment project planned for Davis Square, as of 2022.
You’ll notice something in Somerville that you don’t see much of in most other cities, the significant presence of laundromats! There’s a huge rental community in Somerville and many landlords still do not want to offer laundry facilities in their buildings, something I strongly advise each landlord to change, laundry should be offered in buildings/multi-family homes. Traditionally, Somerville residents stay in their homes less than the average homeowner, this is heavily manipulated by the rental population which makes up more than 1/2 the residents in Somerville.

Somerville real estate is dynamic like Cambridge due to the heavy influence of outside investors. Over the past decade or so, as older residents who spent most of their life in Somerville pass on, their homes have been sold, renovated, and commonly turned into 2-3 condo buildings instead of a 2-3 apartment home, taking away some of the character that made Somerville unique. Rarely a single family home can still be found, mostly in East Somerville, Magoun Sq, Sping Hill, Ten Hills, and Prospect Hill areas.
Traffic in Somerville is tough at times, more so since bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes have cut roads down from 2 lanes to 1. Plan accordingly in Somerville, even the cut throughs get congested nowadays, until 7pm or so, then things clear up everywhere. Parking your car can be tough at times too, should you not have a driveway and not purchase a spot in a garage, then you do need a street parking permit (roughly $45/year).
Dining can be found all throughout the city from Rt. 16 to East Somerville. Assembly Row is a newer mega-development, it’s difficult to get to for locals in the heart of Somerville and West Somerville, Assembly Row is considered to be an outcast, commonly forgotten about by residents since it’s on the other side of I-93. Most long time residents of the area can tell you about the Good Time Emporium that used to sit where Assembly Row is now, most called it Good Times…because it was in deed a good time hanging out there.

Activities
There are many youth and adult activities/sports available in Somerville, both associated with the city and associated with membership clubs serving the greater Boston area. There is so much more going on in and around Somerville it’s difficult for me to touch upon it all. There are many parks/gardens/playgrounds to enjoy (roughly 63), most notably the Somerville Community Path and Dilboy Stadium area. The nearby universities always have events going on in Cambridge and right over the border in Medford. Popular nightlife areas include Davis Sq, Inman Sq, and Union Sq….Assembly Row is a new fancy development of residential, retail, dining, business, healthcare, and a light rail orange line station…and there’s some nightlife there too. There’s a theatre in Davis Sq and a larger Showcase theater in Assembly Row. Ball Sq and Magoun Sq, and Broadway between Foss Park and Sullivan Sq get honorable mentions for dining and nightlife too.
