Population
Most would say living in Cambridge is enjoyable and annoying. Cambridge is a unique place, charming with it’s vast historical attributes and stories, diverse with residents from all walk of life, hosts to spirited debate, and welcoming to all. Cambridge is a densely populated city compared to most others in the state. Truly a city where neighborhoods have character, unlike a more suburbia town where neighborhoods aren’t much different than others. The Watertown-Cambridge greenway, an old rail trail being converted to a multi-use pathway is one of many new developments going on in Cambridge, which is always changing. Recently, more bike lanes and a dedicated bus lane were implemented along parks of Mass ave, where some businesses were not happy with the loss of street parking for visitors. Cambridge real estate is dynamic due to the heavy influence of inside and outside investors. I would stop short of calling Cambridge a college city, you can easily live in Cambridge and not even be aware of the existence of some of the worlds top universities in such close proximity. The city has a strong bike community, which has led to a large push in recent years to make the city more bike friendly and less car friendly, which has it’s pros and cons. There’s a huge renter population in Cambridge, about half of them are here 2-4 years for school, the others are mostly working professionals. Traditionally, Cambridge residents stay in their homes the same as the average homeowner. Many notable people have and still do call Cambridge home.

Many neighborhoods are lacking teh color green (like the port), while others seem straight out of a story book with the architecture and tree lined streets (like neighborhood 9 and Agassiz). Unique architecture can be seen all over the city, from historic buildings to some of the newer buildings at nearby university campuses. It’s not impossible to find a single family home in Cambridge, but they are the minority by far. The city is flooded with multi-family homes and high-rise buildings.
Traffic is non-existent at nights and even some times during the weekends, otherwise it’s just best to expect to run into traffic all other days between 8am-7pm. If you’ve gotten a good handle of cut throughs to make your way around to avoid some of the main roads then kudos to you, even those will only save you 5 min or so on your commute though. Parking your car can be tough at times too, should you not have a driveway and not purchase a spot in a garage, then you do need a street parking permit (roughly $45/year).
Dining can be found within a short walk of 95% of residences, not only within the famous squares. There are so many unique offerings throughout the city, residents have no problem finding something that fits their cravings, whether it be an affordable take out meal, or an expensive higher-end meal dining in a restaurant. There are also some notable specialty markets for home chefs and/or “foodies”.

Activities
There are many youth and adult activities/sports available in Cambridge, both associated with the city and associated with membership clubs serving the greater Boston area. Cambridge has more events than others, it’s not possible for me touch upon it all, but I’ll try anyway! Parks/gardens are all over to enjoy (there are 14 community gardens for growing food), dogs parks, playgrounds, most notably the space along the banks of the charles river frequented by many every day, doubles as the city border. Memorial drive (the road along the charles river) closes to vehicle traffic on Sundays from 11am-7pm for residents to enjoy. The nearby universities always have events going on. There’s 1, 9 hole golf course (public) along with other outdoor activities/sports around the fresh pond area, and a theatre and retail too. Great dining, retail, concerts, etc can be found in Harvard Sq, Central Sq, or Kendall Sq and beyond. Cambridge public library has great events for kids and adults year round, it’s an impressively large library with green space enjoyed by many on nice weather days. This website shows some city run events, but again, there are so many throughout the year and offerings seem to change each year.
