Most would say Newton is an aesthetically pleasing and charming city, with a comfortable and friendly vibe. There are 5 colleges and universities that call Newton home, along with many public parks/greenspaces, and a large running community. One of the oldest suburban commuting cities in the country, Newton real estate was built up long ago by wealthy commuters into Boston. Traditionally, Newton residents stay in their homes longer than the average homeowner. Many local and nationally notable people call Newton home.

Real Estate

Much of Newton real estate are old large homes with character, although there has been much modernization going on too, with condo complexes being built in place of some retail/office buildings and municipal parking lots. Some even buying expensive homes only to demolish it and build a new custom home in it’s place. Taking a drive through Newton you’ll see some wonderful brick homes, large wooden homes, many of which are very different from the next, especially along Beacon St and Comm ave, then branching off those roads into the neighborhoods. Believe it or not, Newton has more in common with a regular suburbia town than one would think, having areas where homes sell for half of the price of other areas. 

Traffic

Like most Greater Boston towns, there are moments where traffic can be frustrating in many areas of the city (especially the random Saturday at noon when you’re moving 10ft every time the light changes on Centre St). The big arteries (Comm ave, Chestnut St, Walnut St, Centre st, Beacon St, Washington St) will always have some level of traffic during the 7am-7pm hours. Some other streets can get congested due to their use as a detour for residents avoiding traffic, especially the surrounding neighborhoods close to the intersections where Chestnut St, Walnut St, Centre St, and Washington St meet Comm ave. Newton is a densely populated city for it’s size, more so now than before condo complexes of the past 5-10 years were built. Also, good luck on Needham st on a weekend day, try to avoid it as much as you can, that single lane road with all that retail is unenjoyable to put it nicely.

Newton is home to an eclectic dining, bar, and retail scene, many of which are decades old places that spark some nostalgia in residents and visitors. Dining and bars are sprinkled all throughout Newton, giving almost each corner of the city a go to/fan favorite place that others will flock to from other cities/towns.

There are many youth and adult sports clubs and activities available in Newton, far beyond the popular big 4 sports. Multiple golf courses (public & private), gyms with diverse offerings, and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Boston can all be found in Newton. The Charles river can be enjoyed by canoe or kayak as it doubles as the city border. Newton has lots of farmers markets throughout the year that are a really nice treat, along with their massive public library.
