Most would say Johnston is a typical suburbia town, charming, friendly, and quieter than most of it’s neighbors. Johnston is what I would call a gateway in RI, where the dense city life transitions to the more rural type of life. About 1/3 of Johnston is undeveloped, despite the ongoing developments in recent years (and more to come). For better or worse, part of Johnstons’ claim to fame is the Central Landfill. Residents close to the landfill hardly notice it’s existence, and some of these homes are the higher priced homes of Johnston. There’s everything from dense neighborhoods, to wide open farms, to corporate headquarters, to decades old mom and pop businesses in Johnston. Traditionally, Johnston residents stay in their homes longer than the average homeowner.
